We have had the best sailfishing of the year over the past two weeks and it continues as the conditions hold up. Out best day has been where we only fished for 2 hrs. We ended those two hours catching 7 out of 8 sails before our charter just had enough of the rough seas. Coincidentally there was a new Florida record made on that day 56 sails. I have no doubt that if we had the whole day to fish we could've been right there. These fish have been biting up and down the coast with our better days coming to the north of Fort Lauderdale.
We have caught a few dolphin over the past week, most of them coming on east wind day before the full moon. The east wind keeps the fish feeding off the Ft. Lauderdale coast.
A few sharks are around from silkies to bulls we have been seeing a couple each trip. The silkies have been eating our kite baits intended for sailfish and other species. If we have been able to see the bite we are able to catch them on monofilament and circle hooks. The bull sharks have been on the wrecks. I believe they are there because when people are catching gag groupers they are looking for an easy meal. I am really interested to see if they remain now with the grouper ban.
Cobias have been migrating north following manta rays on their way north. The key to this fishery off fort lauderdale is getting lucky. We do not have a really tall tower so most of our luck has been finding the fish while they take a break on some of our numerous wrecks in the area. Best bet for the cobias has been to run to the north as these fish tend to hang out in great numbers to the north of lauderdale.
